Joseph Lines was my Great Grandfather. He formed the company G&J Lines with his brother George. They primarily made rocking horses.
He attended St Andrews School, Camden, starting, aged 7, on October 1855. His Disposition and Attitude was shown, when admitted as ‘Can read a little’. He was admitted into the 5th class.. At the time of quitting school, in August 1861 he was in the 1st class. His parents, Abel and Jane Lines, were living at 91, Saffron Hill. Abel’s occupation was Skin Dresser, and there were 7 children in the family. The cause of leaving was ‘Gone to work’ and his character was ‘Very Good’. In those days teachers did not hide their opinions, one of his fellow pupils is described as ‘a tiresome boy’
He married Jane Fitzhenry on the 30th of June 1877 and they had eight children,
- William (1879 – 1963)
- Edith (1880 – 1957)
- Walter (1882 – 1972)
- Mary (1883 – 1958)
- Rosa (1885 – 1889)
- George (1888 – 1983) – My Grandfather.
- Winifred (1890 – 1983)
- Arthur (1992 – 1962)
According to https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#calendar Search for Lines and 1932 (he died 31st December 1931):

The story of his will tells how these effects were distributed.

(this post is a bit of a place holder – I will add more information later)
Your great-grandfather was one of the two people listed as an executor of my great-great-grandfather’s estate when he died in December 1923. My great-great-grandfather was Ebenezer Edwin Austin, and the records a family member has obtained indicate that he proposed Joseph as a member of the Belgrave Lodge (Masonic) in October 1894. I wondered if any of your family records might shed more light on their connection.
I had not heard of him until now, though I have just found a reference in the The London Gazette of December 1904 where Ebenezer Austin is an executor for a Henry Cosson – whose probatesearch record can be found here. I will update this if any further information surfaces
Dear John – I am desperately looking for answers – Frederick Lines – had 4 sons (Frederick Thomas Lines, Stephen Lines, Harry John Lines (My Grandfather), Richard Frederick Albert Lines and daughter Hannah Lines. – I need info on Frederick Thomas Lines who immigrated to South Africa in 1878 about. Kind Regards Michelle, Elizabeth Lines-Dovey
I can not find a Frederick Thomas Lines who emigrated to South Africa around 1878 in the people I have researched. though I have only really looked at the descendants of Joseph Lines. Abel Lines (1807-1877), Joseph’s father, had 3 sons, Thomas (1836-1883), George (1841-1921) and Joseph (he also had 5 daughters).
Thomas Lines had 2 sons, Alfred, born 1872, and John, born 1874.
George had 1 son, Albert (1871-1908)
Abel did have brothers, who I have not researched extensively
Hi John but when you mentioned about the Thomas being an Ostner – it all adds up – I have the book to confirm he was and that he then decided to embark on his travels
I Strongly believe he is my Great Grand Father
Warm Regards
Michelle Elizabeth Lines
Dear John,
My Great grandfather when arriving in South Africa immediately started training show horses and racing horses and owned a booking hall at Turffontein Race Course in Johannesburg, South Africa. Loving the Horse so much that all his children owned horses and he would always give advise to them to train for stamina and speed – again reference to the brother Thomas Frederick Lines – Ostner at Chandelon Lodge, near Buckingham – owned by William Abbott
I would really love to hear from you
Warm Regards
Michelle Elizabeth Lines (Lizzy)
